A quote from a bulletin board:

About understanding all the "bpd crap", don't try to understand it with normal, adult logic. It won't work. A bpd adult is emotionally retarded. They have the emotional maturity of a 2-year-old. Their empathy is faulty, their memories are distorted, and their resources to care for themselves emotionally are practically non-existent.

That sounds about right to me. My mother became a lot easier to deal with when I figured out that she probably has bpd and stopped applying normal logic to her behavior. This description pretty much fits her. I often describe her as having the emotional maturity of a three-year old and the hormones of a thirteen year old. That's a bad combination. She also remembers things in ways that don't match real occurances and as far as I can tell, thinks her memories are true. She says she doesn't want to be alone in her old age, but the way she acts is almost guaranteed to ensure that she will never have any kind of lasting relationship with anyone who has a choice about it.
