Le Ville de Quebec
May. 31st, 2003 01:15 pmI'm currently in Quebec City, having spent the last couple of days here. It's been quite miserable weather but the sun is shining today. (Why does it always start shining when I'm about to leave?) It's quite beautiful here, with antique buildings everywhere. The whole of the old city is actually a UN Heritage site. On Thursday I went to visit some of the military history sites around Quebec City - the Plains of Abraham where the English and the French and the Americans fought, the Citadel, and the ramparts of the city walls. (Yes, it's a walled city.) The most noticeable thing about being here though is the flocks of tourists. There are schoolchildren EVERYWHERE. On the Plains of Abraham, there were at least half a dozen mini-battles being reenacted by the French and British. Yesterday I went for a short hike with some hostellers from France (there are so many French tourists here) to the Jacques Cartier national park and then visited the Huron-Wendat reservation's education site (where I got in for free!). The Auberge de la Paix where I'm staying is right in the middle of Old Quebec City, in a very beautiful but touristy area. Today I'm at the Museum of Civilisation (hence the free Internet access to write to you all) looking at exhibitions on medieval times and other such interesting things. Tonight I catch the train to Rivière-du-Loup.
I will update this better, I swear, once I catch up with my journal. That is, if I can avoid leaving my water bottle open in my bag again. :(
