Midnight excursions... no, not those!!
May. 23rd, 2003 10:25 pmWell, I've come to the conclusion that the jail is just a little creepy. Let's back up a little. Last night, I missed the jail tour due to being late on the train/bus evilness. But luckily, I was all restless and met the guy on the midnight to dawn shift, Steve. He offered to take me on an informal (free!) tourby myself. Um, did we note the time of his shift? Walking around the solitary confinement cells in the basement, the claustrophobically small cells (just big enough for tiny bed and toilet bucket), and visiting the gallows and courtyard where the bodies was buried. Just a little creepy. And then I met a panicky school child on my way back to my dorm who swore a ghost was flushing the toilet next to her!! So yeah. Not going to wander around that atnight again! (Although obviously I couldn't wimp out in the middle when he'd specially offered to take me around!)
Today, I woke up early and snuck out of my room to avoid waking my cellmates. I got a free choc chip muffin (made by Steve on his night shifr) due to my recent acquisition of a 23rd year, then headed down to the market where I picked up a punnet of mixed berries. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, eaten as I wandered down the sunny path overlooking the Ottawa Lock, next to the gorgeous sights of Parliament Hill, Chateau Laurier and the park next to the National Gallery. The market was gorgeous, btw, full of flower and fruit stalls andn eat little restaurants. I was intending to head over to the National Gallery and Basilica opposite, but I thought I'd just stop over at Parliament Hill and with one thing and another, ended up taking a free walking tour for around an hour (including the strict security). Interesting titbits. The Canadian GG is a woman (much more sensible and dignified than the current, sorry, recently departed Australian one). Trudeau looks like a lean weasel type. The badly paid sculptors added their own faces to one elaborately sculpted foyer to get a touch of immortality and revenge. :) Only the library remains of the original Gothic structure after a huge fire early in the 20th century. There is a cat sanctuary on the grounds (although it cares for more than just cats).
Okay, times up for now. Will be back to update more of this tomorrow.
