... global warming is caused by refrigerators.

The brilliant designers who did the residence I live in decided that it would be smart to keep fridges inside enclosed pantry cupboards with little circulation.

Y’know, there are reasons why I don’t drink. This morning is one of them. Hmm, and that dreamy eyed compliant state from last night is another. Just as well I was at home with friends. Today was relatively productive. I went to Robarts early to book an appointment with the resume clinic. (As an indication of why this was necessary, it took exactly 3 minutes from the opening of the same day bookings for them to close.) Spent some time catching up on news and emailing people before heading over to the careers center. It seems the Canadian resumes are much shorter – no longer than 2 pages – and that my resume lacks direction. True enough, mostly it’s just chronological, not particularly skills-directed. So yeah, need to fix that tomorrow morning to apply for food service work. (Yeah, I know, I have no experience. But you tell me something else that will have work on campus at this date.) After that it was up to the ISXO to have a chat about the fact that Melbourne Uni hasn’t approved the subjects that Toronto’s CS department approved at the very last minute. (And we’re serious here, it was like 4.53 pm on the Friday.) Apparently if there are problems, Miranda will ask the Dean to overrule the department, so it should be okay next semester. Which is a relief, since going home a semester early would have been messy. I also found out the interesting news that Toronto doesn’t actually care what subjects I take. Maybe I can sneak in that creative writing subject I’ve been wanting to do, depending on what Melbourne Uni says. After that, I headed back to Robarts for a very long email session. Did another group email and then wrote to various individuals, especially Mum about getting money transferred (it’s good to know I can pay the rent) and international driver’s licences and things like that. I’ve also finally heard from Godma and Aunty Audrey, which is nice. They’re planning all sorts of things already, including my Christmas vacation!

Then it was back here to have spaghetti for lunch (the menu for the week) and I finally did some of this reading for Law, Religion and Public Discourse (LRPD). Today’s excerpt was from John Rawls’ Political Liberalism. Very technical concepts of liberalism. I think I sort of agree. It was all about reasonable comprehensive doctrines and public reason and basic constitutional features based on public reason. Hmm. Maybe I don’t understand it. I also did some revision of the greedy algorithm proofs from CCC (the subject which has such a confusing name that even the lecturer just uses the subject code). I tried to ring Michelle but she was out again.

I’d just like to mention that one of the wonderful things about Toronto is their public library. There are over a hundred branches and they have a much more extensive collection than the Boroondara network. The branch at the south end of campus has a particularly good science fiction collection – I finally traced Emma Bull’s Bone Dance. (For the record, it’s been disappointing.) I also found three of the modern Georgette Heyer novels, although I didn’t find Instead of the Thorn.
